In the United States, recycling plays a vital role in reducing waste, conserving natural resources and minimizing environmental impacts. Yet the US is facing significant variability in its practices. Let's break it down and uncover where we're succeeding, where we're falling short and what we can do to drive progress. Current recycling trends In 2024, recycling trends in the US revealed a tale of two realities Stark disparities between states and material-specific challenges.
Speaker 0:State-by-state performance Some states shined, like Maine with a 65% recycling rate and Vermont at 51%. Their success stems from policies like deposit return systems and extensive public education programs. In contrast, states like West Virginia and Louisiana lagged behind recycling as little as 2% and 4% respectively, largely due to inadequate infrastructure and limited awareness. Material-specific rates Paper and cardboard recycling topped the charts at 68%, thanks to well-established systems. However, plastics recycling remained abysmal at just 9%, hindered by sorting difficulties and contamination. Glass fared slightly better at 33%, but improvements in collection and processing efficiency are still needed. Corporate leadership businesses are stepping up to address the recycling gap. Redwood Materials is making strides in lithium-ion battery recycling, recovering over 95% of critical metals, a major advancement for the circular economy. Wm's 2024 recycling report showcased investments in public education and infrastructure to tackle recycling challenges head-on.
