Speaker 1:

Welcome to another episode of Sustainability Unveiled, where we explore the latest trends shaping our world. Today, we're diving into the fascinating realm of vertical farming, a practice revolutionizing the way we grow and consume food. My name is Jessica Hunt and I am the host of Sustainability Unveiled. Our featured article reveals a new analysis from Straits Research predicting that the global vertical farming market is set to reach 59.1 billion by 2031, with an impressive CAGR of 24.1%. The key drivers behind this growth are the system's efficiency, year-round crop production and consistent produce quality.

Speaker 1:

Conventional farming involves cultivating crops on shelves or towers in controlled indoor settings using artificial lighting and temperature conditions. It has gained popularity as an alternative to conventional farming, especially in urban settings, reducing emissions associated with transporting crops. The major segments of the global vertical farming market include hydroponics, aquaponics and aeroponics. Growing crops from a nutrient-rich water-based solution is expected to see the most growth among these methods. One of the key advantages driving the growth of vertical farming is space-saving technologies. By arranging crops vertically, farms require considerably less space while achieving higher crop yields. The report suggests that some of the highest yielding vertical farms may produce nearly 350 times more crops per square yard than traditional farms. The integration of IoT technologies is another factor contributing to the industry's growth. Vertical farms are incorporating devices that provide insights into growing conditions, such as natural light availability, temperature and soil pH levels. Farmers are working on developing automated, compact, high-performing vertical farm designs.

Speaker 1:

Vertical farming meets the growing demand for local produce and contributes to agricultural emissions reductions. With the need to decarbonize the agricultural sector becoming critical, vertical farming emerges as a sustainable solution emitting about 70 percent less carbon compared to an open-field agriculture. As the global population is expected to increase by 50 percent by 2050, conventional agriculture practices face challenges such as soil and water depletion and deforestation. Vertical farming has the potential to conserve these resources while supplying fresh food to metropolitan centers promptly, without the emissions associated with long-distance transportation. The report identifies North America's vertical farming market as the most significant shareholder, with an expected growth rate of nearly 29 percent from 2023 to 2031. Europe is also expected to see rapid growth, projecting a kagar of 26.7 in the same period.

Speaker 1:

The top 10 players in the vertical farming industry, according to the report, include AeroFarms, plenty, unlimited, calera, app Harvest, heliospectra, signify Holding, osram, everlight Electronics, valoy Sky Greens, hort Americas and Spread. Are you familiar with any of those brands? As we conclude today's episode, it's evidence that vertical farming is not just a trend. It's a transformative force in agriculture, offering sustainable solutions to some of our most pressing challenges.
